Gackt (real name: Gakuto Kamui 神成楽斗) is a well-known J-Rock/visual kei musician and singer. He started out as the lead singer of the band Malice Mizer (マリス・ミゼル, the same band Mana played in) but became an almost-overnight success as a solo artist after the band broke up. He is well-known for his classical influence as well as his dark yet flamboyant costumes (which may overshadow his overtly masculine voice).
Biography and Influence
Gackt was born on July 4 (he used to claim the year was 1540, but it is widely believed that he was actually born in 1973) in Okinawa, Japan and was raised in a very straight-laced household, his parents being music teachers. He was rebellious from a young age and (supposedly) nearly drowned after falling off a boat at the age of 7; this claim was mirrored in the backstory for the manga and anime Mermaid Melody: Pichi Pichi Pitch (マーメイドメロディーぴちぴちピッチ). (He once claimed he had near-death experiences after this accident; this was also used to drive the plot of said series.) Throughout his childhood, Gackt claims, he was only allowed to listen to classical music and enka, and it was not until he was a young adult that he became interested in rock music. He cites Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" as his primary inspiration. All these influences are audible in his music.
