George H. W. Bush is a former President of the United States and the father of former U.S. President George W. Bush. Rising to national prominence as Ronald Reagan's vice president, Bush Sr. succeeded Reagan as president following the 1988 election. Though popular earlier in his term, particularly after a resounding victory in the Gulf War, a faltering economy and backtracking on his "read my lips, no new taxes" campaign vow culminated in Bill Clinton defeating him in 1992 (since then, despite their political differences, the two men have become close friends). He also banned broccoli from the White House.
