Phelps took a hardliner fire-and-brimstone attitude towards society, laser-targeting his efforts on homosexuality. Using cheeky slogans such as "God hates fags" and "fags die, God laughs", he additionally considered anyone with a more benevolent attitude (even if only marginally so) towards the gays than him a "fag enabler" and guaranteed a spot in Hell. Even mainstream anti-gay evangelicals condemned Phelps, albeit for tactical reasons as their viewpoints shared more overlap than the mainstreamers would willingly admit.
