The most famous of Pokémon, Pikachu (ピカチュウ), whose name roughly translates as "spark mouse", pika (ピカ) being a Japanese onomatopoeia for sparks or sparkling (from "pikapika" or ぴかぴか), and chu (チュウ) being the Japanese equivalent of "squeak", is known to just about everyone who has even heard of the Pokémon phenomenon. It is the Electric-type mouse mascot of Pokémon, reflected by its protagonist role in the Pokémon anime and its frequent appearances in the games (most prominently in the anime-inspired Pokémon Yellow). It evolves into the larger and stronger, but slower Raichu by the Thunder Stone, and starting with Gold and Silver, evolves from the smaller, even more obnoxiously cute Pichu.
