The most famous and well known of Pokémon, Pikachu (ピカチュウ), whose name roughly translates as "spark mouse", pika (ピカ)being a Japanese onomatopoeia for sparks or sparkling (from "pikapika" or ぴかぴか), and chu(チュウ) being the Japanese equivalent of "squeak", is known to just about everyone who has even heard of the Pokémon phenomenon. It is the mascot of Pokémon, probably because it is the star of the Pokémon anime.
Pikachu is an electric-type Pokémon found in every Game Boy game. It evolves into the larger and stronger, but slower Raichu [With the exception of the game Pokémon Yellow, as it is based off the anime where Pikachu refuses to evolve] by the Thunder Stone, and in the games from Gold, Silver, and up, evolves from the smaller, even more obnoxiously cute Pichu.
