With his iconic wheelchair and synthesized robotic voice, both necessitated by a slow-progressing ALS diagnosis in his twenties, he was one of the very few scientists to have a recognizable public image.
Hawking died on March 14, 2018, over 50 years after his ALS diagnosis.
