A former Jedi Master who in his heyday kicked major ass (as seen in Episode II and Gendy Tartakovsky's "Clone Wars" cartoons), Yoda's original appearances had him lifting Luke Skywalker's spaceship out of a marsh, giving advice and plot exposition, then finally dying of old age.
