The most famous and well known of Pokemon, Pikachu (whose name roughly translates as "spark mouse", pika being a Japanese onomatopoeia for sparks or sparkling, and chu being the Japanese equivalent of "squeak") is known to just about everyone who has even heard of the Pokemon phenomenon. It is the mascot of Pokemon, probably because it is the star of the Pokemon anime.
Pikachu is an electric-type Pokemon found in every Game Boy game. It evolves into the larger, stronger, but slower Raichu[With the exception of the game "Pokemon Yellow"] by the Thunder Stone, and in the games from Gold, Silver, and up, evolves from the smaller, even more obnoxiously cute Pichu.
