VARY: I like spears. ^_^

One of the main characters of the freeware RPG Dragon Warrior IV: Renaissance.

Little is known about Vary, except that she was orphaned at an early age, sought refuge in the holy city of Lynanth, and was taken in by the sisters of Lynanth's Grand Temple of Rubiss. When Vary turned 18 years old, she became a sister herself. Because of her unparalleled faith and devotion to Rubiss, she rose through the ranks of the Temple hierarchy in record time, ultimately attaining the rank of Mother Superior.

At the end of the game's third episode, Vary asked the internationally famous warrior and explorer, Sir Lancelot Bader, if she could leave Lynanth and become his new traveling companion after the mysterious death of his old partner, Thomas Cann. This could be because Vary was infatuated with Lancelot, but she also resented the stifling environment of the Grand Temple, and wanted to use Lancelot's ship to pursue a spiritual journey and see the world outside of her cloister.

Vary's adoptive father, Labry Porte, is the highest-ranking member of the Temple hierarchy. His health is fading due to his age, and while Vary would have been next in line to assume control of Lynanth, she left the country with Lancelot on a vision quest. Because of this, Labry is currently preoccupied with finding another worthy successor.

As her name suggests, Vary is proficient with both magic and weapons, and she is able to wield a number of unique combat skills due to her position as a holy woman. Although her background story and character design were formulated by Brasington Lane Software Planning staff member Friede Genner, her name was actually team leader Indogutsu Tenbuki's idea. Genner and Tenbuki were discussing possible character outlines on IRC, and Genner asked Tenbuki to come up with "...a good name for a warrior-priestess whose interests and talents vary widely."

Vary is almost always shown with a cheerful facial expression, and in the game's dialogue, she ends almost everything she says with the ^_^ emoticon. This is somewhat of an allusion to Xelloss, a character from Friede Genner's favorite anime, Slayers.
