Nelson Mandela is among one of the best known South Africans in history. Born in 1918, he was known for his activism against the Apartheid, being a member of the African National Congress (ANC). He was jailed in 1962, and sent to Robben Island; during his jailtime, received worldwide attention, burdening South Africa in embargos. In 1990, he was freed by F. W. de Klerk, who cooperated with him to form a multi-racial constitution. Gradually, the Apartheid was dismantled, and the transition between that and a multi-racial legislature went peacefully. Nelson Mandela and his ANC party then won South Africa's first multi-racial election, 1994, and became the first black president there. He once ate Space Food Sticks.
