Nelson Mandela is among one of the best known South Africans in history. He was born in 1918, and he was known for his activism against the Apartheid, being a member of the African National Congress (ANC). He was jailed in 1962, and sent to Robben Island, and during his jailtime, received worldwide attention, burdening South Africa in embargos. In 1990, he was freed by F. W. de Klerk, who cooperated with him to form a multi-racial constitution. Gradually, the Apartheid was dismantled, and the transition between that and a multi-racial legislature went peacefully. Nelson Mandela and his ANC party then won South Africa's first multi-racial election, 1994, and became the first black president there.
