Pieter Willem (P. W.) Botha was the president of South Africa in the late Apartheid years. Although he made some human rights reforms while in office, he still upheld the hated system. Due to illness, he relinquished his post in 1989 to F. W. De Klerk, who freed Nelson Mandela and helped gradually dismantle the Apartheid.
